Breast Reconstruction

Breast Reconstruction

Also known as reconstructive mammaplasty or postmastectomy surgery

In Western New York and Buffalo Breast Reconstruction is performed by Dr. Shatkin at the Aesthetic Associates Centre.  Breast reconstruction includes a variety of procedures performed to restore the form and shape of the breast, following mastectomy or lumpectomy surgery. Factors such as individual anatomy, aesthetic goals and the need for any postsurgical chemotherapy or radiation will determine your options. Discussing your cancer surgery with a plastic surgeon before undergoing mastectomy is crucial, because the proposed cancer removal surgery may significantly affect the choices and the results of any type of breast reconstruction.  For women that have had lumpectomy, a minor reconstruction using fat injections may be adequate to improve contour and shape of the breast.

When to Consider Breast Reconstruction

  • If you think reconstruction will give you a sense of psychological well being or a feeling of “wholeness”
    • To help restore your feelings of femininity and confidence in your appearance
    • To improve symmetry if only one of your breasts is affected
    • To allow you to wear low-cut necklines and normal swimwear

    Considerations

    Pros

    • You will not have to cope with wearing external breast forms or pads.
    • This is a way of removing any reminders of your mastectomy and cancer experience.
    • It can help you feel better about how you look and restore confidence in your sexuality.

    Cons

    • Breast reconstruction involves additional surgery, medical appointments and possibly additional costs, however, in most cases insurance will cover these costs.
    • Breast reconstruction may interfere with the natural state of your body, which has just returned to normal health.
    • A reconstructed breast will not have the same sensation and feel as the breast it replaces.

These are the three top pros and cons to weigh when considering breast reconstruction. If you wish to focus on what is unique to you, please consult with Dr. Shatkin.

Are you a good candidate for a breast reconstruction?

If you are in good general health, have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.

Procedure-

Stage 1-  The most common form of breast reconstruction following mastectomy is tissue expansion.  Tissue expansion stretches healthy skin to provide coverage for a breast implant.  Reconstruction with tissue expansion allows an easier recovery than flap procedures, but it is a more lengthy reconstruction process.  It requires many office visits over 4-6 months after placement of the expander to slowly fill the device through an internal valve to expand the skin.  A second surgical procedure will be needed to replace the expander if it is not designed to serve as a permanent implant.

Placement of a Breast Implant

Stage 2-  Surgical placement of a breast implant creates a breast mound.

A breast implant can be an addition or alternative to flap techniques. Saline and silicone implants are available for reconstruction. Reconstruction with an implant alone usually requires tissue expansion as noted in stage 1 above.

Step 3 - Grafting and other specialized techniques create a nipple and areola.

Breast reconstruction is completed through a variety of techniques that reconstruct the nipple and areola as needed or desired by the patient.
